Theatre-in-the-Making presents
“That is the Question: A Few Things About
Shakespeare”
Theatre-in-the-Making’s (TitM)
PlayWrite program presents “That is the
Question: A Few Things About
Shakespeare.” Melding Shakespeare’s work with original
material created by local high-school students, “That is the
Question” plays with the themes, language and characters of
Shakespeare and explores their relevance to the lives of young
people. Suggested for ages 13 and up, “That is the Question”
will be proudly presented April 25 -27 at the Desert Rose Playhouse.
In January, TitM’s students began
working with scenes from plays like “Hamlet,” “As You Like It,” “A
Midsummer Night’s Dream” and others as a ground on which to expand
their own thoughts about vengeance, art, death, identity and
consumer culture. The results go from flipping gender roles in
“Taming of the Shrew” to a reimagining of Hamlet’s conversation with
his father’s ghost to the strange output of the Infinite Monkey
Project. At its root, “That is the Question” points to the
timelessness of Shakespeare’s work and uses it as a tool for young
people to critique the world around them.
TitM
is dedicated to the idea that creative and joyful artistry has the
power to change lives and offers education and experience to youth
and adults in the various disciplines related to the stage.
For seven seasons, TitM’s
PlayWrite program has empowered young
people to speak directly and honestly about their world.
PlayWrite’s strength is that it allows
students to shape their material around a single theme and become
active agents in how that work is presented. The themes chosen
by these students have ranged wildly across subjects as diverse as
violence, the human body, the Grimm Brothers and the periodic table
of elements. The PlayWrite ’08
ensemble has selected the works of William Shakespeare as their
theme.
April 25 – 27th 2008,
TitM will premier this exciting new work at Albuquerque’s
Desert Rose Playhouse (6921 Montgomery Blvd. N.E., Albuquerque, NM,
87109). Performances Friday and Saturday, April 25th
and 26th, will be at 8pm with
a matinee performance on Sunday, April 27th at 1pm.
