When Alex & Toby Hubbard show up to spend the Holidays with their father, Joseph, they find that his new young wife may be maneuvering to make herself the sole heir to their father's fortune. Will Joseph's sister Charlotte be able to keep the family from killing each other? Or will she be the first to snap? Could all this infighting lead to the murder of one of these family members? Of course, it could! This is Foul Play Cafe & we wouldn't have it any other way!

A Moon for the Misbegotten
by Eugene O'Neill
Directed by Jim Cady

Location: The Adobe Theater

Dates: January 13 - February 5
Fridays & Saturdays at 8:00 pm
Sundays at 2:00 pm

Genre: Drama

Description: The Adobe Theatre is proud to announce its production of Eugene O’Neill’s autobiographical play, A Moon for the Misbegotten. This was O’Neill’s last full length play, and is considered one of the classics of American theater.

The story is set on a rundown Connecticut farmhouse in the early 1920’s. It centers around two members of the Hogan family, Phil Hogan and his daughter Josie, and their alcoholic landlord, Jim Tyrone, a third-rate Broadway actor, a man tormented by his past behavior he can neither forget nor forgive. The play unfolds as Phil attempts to convince Josie to blackmail Tyrone into selling them the farm rather than to their rich, obnoxious neighbor, T. Stedman Harder. Seeing a union between Josie and Jim as a solution to both the family’s money problems and Josie’s loneliness, Phil schemes to get them together one way or another. But Josie and Jim are two lost souls, reaching out to each other across a blighted stretch of earth, in pursuit of a love, doomed from the beginning.

Director Jim Cady has assembled a brilliant cast: Lorri Oliver as Josie, Vernon Poitras as Jim Tyrone, Scott Sharot as Phil, Blake Driver as Mike Hogan and Eliot Stenzel as T. Stedman Harder.

This production is part of the Eugene O'Neill Celebration hosted by the Adobe and Vortex theaters.

The Drowsy Chaperone
by Bob Martin & Don McKellar; music & lyrics by Lisa Lambert and Greg Morrison
Directed by Jane and Cy Hoffman

Location: The Adobe Theater

Dates: February 17 - March 11, 2012
Performances:
Fridays & Saturdays at 8:00 pm
Sundays at 2:00 pm

Genre: Musical Comedy

Description: The Adobe Theater to present the award-winning musical The Drowsy Chaperone

The Adobe Theater’s next production will be The Drowsy Chaperone, a comic “musical within a play” that won 5 Tony Awards and 7 Drama Desk Awards. The narrator (played by Ron Bronitsky) quickly bring us into the particulars of his world; a place where a treasured record of a classic musical comedy can transform his room into a stage right before our eyes, can stop and start the action at his whim, and can lay the foundation for a hysterical tale of a day in his life. The Drowsy Chaperone, written by Bob Martin and Don McKellar with music and lyrics by Lisa Lambert and Greg Morrison, opened on Broadway in 2006. This will be the first production of this show in Albuquerque.

The “musical within a play” is a fictitious 1928 show that features mistaken identities, dream sequences, spit takes, a blindfolded roller-skater, an unflappable English butler (Fred Schwab), an absent-minded dowager (Caroline Hogan), a ditzy chorine (Erin Allen), a harried best man (Zane Barker), an aviatrix (!) (Jessica Fisher) and a brides's "Drowsy" (i.e. tipsy) Chaperone (Erin Moody). It’s wedding day for Janet Van De Graaff (Lisette Hererra), the star of Feldzieg’s Follies, who plans to give up her career in order to marry oil tycoon Robert Martin (Tim MacAlpine). The Follies chief investor has hired two gangsters (Jason Adam Cox and Andrew Melendez) to see that Feldzieg (Ronan MacCabe) keeps Janet in the show. Feldzieg enlists Aldolpho (John Keisling), a bumbling Latin Lothario, to seduce Janet and end her relationship with Robert. Meanwhile, Janet is having her own doubts about her groom. You’ll never guess how it all turns out.

Loretta Robinson is the musical director and Edye Allen is the choreographer.

This hilarious award-winning Broadway musical full of singing and dancing is a sure-fire hit for those of us who love musical theatre, and who maybe secretly have that one favorite show that they “star” in when no one else is looking!

Directors Jane and Cy Hoffman are thrilled to bring this musical to The Adobe Theater. “This show is everything a musical comedy should be: fast paced and very funny with infectious music and energetic dancing. Everyone will leave the theater with a smile on his face humming a tune.”

Electricidad
By Luis Alfaro
Directed by Rachel Leos

Location: Experimental Theatre at UNM

Dates: March 8, 9, 10, and 16 at 7:30 pm
March 11 and 18 at 2:00 pm

Description: Luis Alfaro transforms Sophocles' Elektra into a passionate, powerful tale of the revenge cycle in gang culture. Electricidad mourns the murder of her father, an East L.A. gang kingpin, and vows revenge. In her determination, she pulls her brother, Orestes - a young man who managed to leave "the life" - back to commit the most tragic of crimes. At once violent and vibrant, Electricidad taps into the beauty, color and ruthlessness of this abandoned desert barrio. A sassy Abuela serves to add insight to the “old world” of the cholo, while Ifigenia, the sister who returns to the barrio as a nun, shows what cholos have the potential to become. It’s a struggle to find what it means to be a proud Chola when the world around you is a prison.

“Y, mija—cuidate. It’s hard to keep your balance on the edge of a knife.” --Abuela

Description: Mother Road Theatre Company's entry in The Southwest Irish Theater Festival.

THE STORY: The Seafarer is a chilling play about the sea, Ireland, and the power of myth. It's Christmas Eve, and Sharky has returned to Dublin to look after his irascible, aging brother who's recently gone blind. Old drinking buddies Ivan and Nicky are holed up at the house too, hoping to play some cards. But with the arrival of a stranger from the distant past, the stakes are raised ever higher. Sharky may be playing for his very soul.

“The unique and extraordinary aspect of McPherson’s writing is the way in which his characters reveal themselves in tiny details which almost imperceptibly build up an extensive picture of the past, present and future, not just of themselves but of Ireland.”—The Sunday Mail (London)

"…dark and enthralling Christmas fable of despair and redemption…tingles with the author's acute and authentic sense of what is knowable and unknowable in life…The Seafarer may just be the pick-me-up play of the season." —NY Times.

"…a midnight-black comedy, one that wrenches laughter out of the despair of frustrated men whose lives have come to naught…No matter what you're expecting at the halfway mark, you won't feel cheated when the curtain falls." —Wall Street Journal.

"A timeless classic." —Hollywood Reporter

Dates: March 23 - April 15, 2012
Performances:
Fridays & Saturdays at 8:00 pm
Sundays at 2:00 pm

Genre: Comedy

Description: The Adobe entry in The Southwest Irish Theater Festival.

This play is set in a seaside hotel in Inish, Ireland. In order to attract more tourists to the resort, the owner of the hotel has decided to host a serious acting company that will be presenting modern drama in the town's theatre. As bad luck would have it, the plays they present (Ibsen, Strindberg, Tolstoy, Chekhov and the like) all deal with dark topics that have never occurred to the relatively healthy residents of this tight community. Gradually -- and hilariously -- the good folk get dragged into the dark pit of introspection and depression. Even the pit itself is funny since it is excavated by the intense Hector de la Mare and his darkly depressed wife Constance Constantia, the actor manager-team who run the company. The play is a send-up of pretentious artists, cutting-edge drama, and naive Irish village life.

Description: "Suor Angelica" was Giacomo Puccini’s favorite of "Il trittico," his three one-act operas. It is the tragic story of a cloistered nun forced into a convent by her noble family after having a child out of wedlock. The visit of Angelica’s aunt to bring bad news and relieve her of an inheritance brings the tension of evil into a godly, sacred setting. Puccini’s heart-breaking music, for an all female cast, stars in her debut at Opera Southwest the outstanding soprano, Abla Hambla, who brings this miracle play to a beautiful and inspiring climax.

"Gianni Schicchi" is the crafty con artist who outwits greedy relatives determined to rewrite a deceased man’s will in their favor. Filled with outrageous antics this Puccini comedy stars Matthew Burns who returns to Opera Southwest following his acclaimed comic role as Tadeo in our 2010 production of "Italian Girl in Algiers." The score features one of Puccini’s most beautiful and beloved arias, "O mio babbino caro."

Description: In celebration of New Mexico's historical Centennial we are presenting a show by the late Jimmy Galloway. He was both a composer and playwright who wrote about New Mexico history and its unique flavor. His plays were premiered at the University of Albuquerque under the direction of Jim Morley. The actors who have performed in his unique shows proudly call themselves 'The Galloway Players'. The family and friends of Galloway are excited to bring back the creative genius of Jimmy Galloway.

Revelations is a full length comedy-drama bringing together five very unique characters somewhere in very rural desolate New Mexico, somewhere around the year 1900. New Mexico playwright Jimmy Galloway uses marvelously funny, unique and sensitive writing to explore all of the most fundamental elements of being a human being. Galloway uses humor, the characters and the mystique of frontier New Mexico to take the audience on an unusual quest in search of revelations about their own beliefs surrounding reality, love, happiness, spirituality, loneliness, race, friendship, dreams and our inevitable death.

The characters meet in the yard of Ma Jane, a feisty, witty and cantankerous old matriarch who warns that strange things are going to happen today. Ma Jane lives with Dovey, her dreamy and lonely daughter-in-law who has been abandoned by Ma Jane’s son a long time ago. It is not long before Homer, a vulnerable traveling salesman appears in the yard to create some excitement and become unwillingly immersed in the bizarre happenings of the day. The dramatic arrival of an Indian with his Prospector compadre results in more hilarity, chaos and mysterious events. The events of this one day propel all of the characters and the audience to confront personal revelations about what constitutes reality and what experiences and decisions shape our lives and our beliefs. A funny and thoughtful experience!

Revelations will be directed by Annetta Jordan, a University of Albuquerque Theatre Arts Graduate.
