Grass is withering. Cattle are dying. And in the Curry family the brothers are fighting. Their father, H.C. (Ken Bennington) is also concerned that sister Lizzie (Jennifer Lloyd Cary) will be an old maid unless they can promote a match.

Into this tense situation comes a charismatic outsider: Starbuck (J. Ryan Montgomery) claims that for $100 he can bring rain to the ranch. But is he just a con man or can he really solve the family’s problems and also convince Lizzie that she is desirable? (This is obviously NOT the John Grisham thriller with the same title! Neither is it a “reality show”, though there is an offstage character named “Snooki”.)

Richard Nash’s classic romance, The Rainmaker, will open at the ADOBE Theater on April 27, directed by Daryl Streeter. He is well known to local audiences as actor and as director of plays and musicals including “Damn Yankees” (where he played the Devil) and “You’re A Good Man, Charlie Brown”.

The Rainmaker is a favorite play for regional theaters, full of humor and drama. Many people know the 1956 movie version with Burt Lancaster as Starbuck who convinces Katherine Hepburn as plain Lizzie that she is really desirable. The late Lloyd Bridges was also in the cast.

The play is different from the movie but in both it becomes clear that “you gotta have a dream,” and that crushing people’s hopes is cruel and destructive. Deputy Sheriff File (Richard Boehler) is attracted to Lizzie, but his confidence has been destroyed by a previous loss that he tries to hide. Rounding out the cast are Nicholas Fleming and TJ Williams playing the brothers and Steven Suttle as Sheriff Thomas.
