Front of House Job Description 2026
The role of the House Manager is to act as the main representative of the Adobe Theater
concerning audience relations during the run of a show. The House Manager's role is
customer-focused and requires a set schedule aligned with the Adobe Theater season. The
position is expected to fulfill requirements in fifteen to twenty hours per week for most
shows, though there may be fluctuation in required time investment at the theater based
on the run time of each show. The House Manager will work 5 hours during the week
following the strike of a show to help with general maintenance, clean-up, and preparation
for the following production.
The House Manager works Fridays and Saturdays from 5pm to 10pm, and Sundays from
12pm to 5pm. Each run, three Thursday night performances (includes Preview night) will
have the same anticipated schedule of 5pm - 10pm. There is an expectation that the House
Manager will be responsible for returning patron phone calls and emails vetted by the
Supervisor that are directly related to Box Office reservations. The duties and
responsibilities of the House Manager are to be supported by the Supervisor, Technical
Director, and the Board of Directors. The Treasurer of the Board of Directors is the point-of-
contact person for the House Manager.
Regular Responsibilities During Run of a Show
• Being present for each show to assist Box Office volunteers, the nightly Board
Reps, and patrons arriving to attend the show.
• Ensuring concessions are stocked, “Doors Open At...” sign is placed, and the lobby
area is tidy before opening the House. Ensuring that paper goods are well stocked in
each restroom in the theater. The Vice Chair is responsible for paper products, soap,
water, and trash bags. Another Board Member is assigned to purchasing
concessions. FOH Manager is to let each of them know well in advance when there
is a need to restock.
• Adjusting thermostats in the theater to maintain a comfortable temperature for
audience and actors alike. NO ONE should touch the thermostats except the House
Manager.
• Set up the nightly cash drawer, using the start-up bag of cash found in the safe.
• Printing the nightly reservations list from the Adobe Ticketing System and reviewing
it for notable circumstances such as those who need wheelchair and walker
accommodations.
• Receiving communication from the Stage Manager (SM) regarding House Open, 15
minutes, and 5 minutes. FOH Manager turns off lobby lights when SM announces
places have been called. FOH Manager turns on lobby lights when intermission
begins.
• Sharing with SM regarding outstanding reservations and together FOH Manager and
SM determine when to lock the front doors and put out the sign for next admittance
at intermission.
• Turning on the point-of-sale system for credit card transactions, assisting with
transactions, and training volunteers and board members as needed on the use of
the system. Altering the Treasurer if there are additional categories needed.
• Assisting with reservation questions as they arise (often related to cast/crew
comps). In charge of priority seating.
• Supervising concession sales before the show and during intermission.
• Tidying up of the seating area, to include picking up discarded programs and other
items at the close of each show.
• Closing out of nightly sales, setting up start bag for the following show ($150 in $1,
$5, $10, and $20 denominations more smaller bills is best), and properly
recording sales information on the daily reconciliation sheet. The cash total must
balance the amount of cash in the daily bag.
• Taking trash out from FOH area to the dumpster. This must be done each Sunday - or
more frequently - to alleviate pest invasion!
• Training new volunteers at the Box Office as needed. Ensure all volunteers know
where the emergency exits are located.
• Gaining a working knowledge of the Adobe Ticketing System. Be able to make ticket
sales within the Ticketing System at the theater.
• Learning and being able to carry out fire evacuation plans and be able to use the
defibrillator.
• Knowing the locations of each of the theater’s fire extinguishers and exits.
• Writing monthly reports to the Board of Directors about what’s going on in
your particular area.
Responsibilities During the Week Following Strike of a Show (up to 5 hours):
• Doing small maintenance items as requested by Facilities Manager. This will be
coordinated with the Supervisor and Facilities Manager.
